I have always felt a deep connection with horses, these majestic creatures who have played vital roles in human history. They have been our companions, our aids in agriculture and transportation, and most of all our friends. However, the current practice of exporting live horses from Canada for slaughter tears at the fabric of this shared history and relationship.

Every year, thousands of horses are crammed into planes and shipped overseas under appalling conditions, only to face a cruel end. The Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food reported that in 2020 alone, nearly 2,500 Canadian horses were exported for slaughter. These beautiful animals endure unimaginable suffering during transport—often packed tightly, deprived of food and water, and subjected to injury from long and stressful journeys.

The Canadian government introduced Bill C-355 with the intent to ban this inhumane practice once and for all. This Bill seeks not only to end the export of horses for slaughter but also to affirm Canada’s commitment to the ethical treatment of animals. Bill C-355 represents an opportunity for Canada to set a global example in the humane treatment of animals. The Bill will be coming up soon in the House of Commons so the time to act is now!  I will be meeting with the MP of my jurisdiction at the beginning of April ('26) and will bring these signatures with me. so please know that every signature matters.  

Countries like the United States have banned horse slaughter since 2007, showing a strong commitment to animal welfare. It is time for Canada to follow suit and demonstrate that we will not tolerate treatment that violates our fundamental values of compassion and respect for these noble creatures.
