Support Bill 80, “The Viewer Discretion Act” 2023 - No More Graphic Anti-Choice Pamphlets!
The Issue
Dear The Honourable Paul Calandra,
As a citizen in your riding, I am writing to you to express my immense objection and disapproval of the recent graphic flyers handed out by the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform to residents in Stouffville and at Bill Hogarth S.S. in Markham, among other areas, and ask that you support Private Bill 80, “The Viewer Discretion Act” 2023.
These flyers were unknowingly dropped off at residential homes without any prior warning of graphic images of fetuses, without discretion and without consideration of the public at large. The affects of this flyer has been traumatizing to me, my family, families with children and my neighbours. Some were lucky to find these flyers stuck to door handles and between storm doors before young children found them, but others were not as lucky and some children in our community have now been exposed to these very inappropriate images.
Furthermore, the students and staff at Bill Hogarth Secondary School, Bur Oak Secondary and Wismer Public School, all in Markham, were held captive to a group of protestors outside of their school with banners and handouts of the same graphic flyers. This action has proven to be damaging to a number of students and staff who are now having to deal with the aftermath of such insensitive action.
While I understand everyone is entitled to their own belief and religious views, I do not support this form of propaganda and distribution of disturbing images without consent. Bill 80 will require any sort of graphic literature or material must be delivered in an opaque envelope with a warning label before being delivered to Ontario residents. This will give us our individual choice as to whether or not we would want to open said letter, and control how we would want to have these conversations with our family, friends and neighbours, should we wish.
I hope you will take this opportunity to listen to your constituents on this matter and pass along our voice when you represent us during the reading and voting of Bill 80.
