Support Articles of Impeachment Against Donald Trump - Defend Democracy Now
Donald Trump has crossed every line. Donald Trump has defied the Supreme Court, wrecked the economy, fired tens of thousands of Americans, dismantled vital government agencies, and threatened to send U.S. citizens to an El Salvadorian prison. Trump's actions are a danger to our democracy and basic human rights. It’s time for Congress to act.
UPDATE: On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Congressman Al Green delivered remarks on the House floor, introducing H.Res.537, an article of impeachment against President Trump for bypassing Congress and launching a military strike on Iran. This followed his earlier impeachment filing on May 15, 2025. Green invoked Rule IX to require the House to act within 48 hours. Instead of debating the resolution, the House voted to table it—effectively killing the measure—with 344 "yeas" from both Republicans and Democrats. However, 79 Democrats voted "no," refusing to let the effort be dismissed. These 79 votes represent the members of Congress who support impeachment proceedings and are willing to stand up for accountability.
We, the undersigned, urge ALL Congress members to support Representative Green! It is time to hold Trump accountable before further damage is done.
We are being dragged through a rapid and terrifying descent into authoritarianism. Trump has proven time and again that he has no respect for the Constitution, the lives and freedoms of the American people, or the rule of law.
Below is an open letter from one concerned citizen (the author of this petition), articulating why Congress must act now to support articles of impeachment against Donald Trump:
Dear Members of Congress,
I’m writing to you not just as a concerned citizen but as someone who wakes each day with growing dread about the dark reality our country now faces. Under the influence of Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and others in power, we have suddenly found ourselves living in an authoritarian state—and it's terrifying.
Every day brings new and overwhelming evidence that the rights, freedoms, safety, and dignity of millions of Americans are under attack. Decisions are being made that hurt the majority of us, especially the most vulnerable. Trump and his allies are threatening the foundations of democracy, justice, equity, and the Constitution itself.
Let me be clear about what we do not support and what we expect Congress to actively work to protect us from:
• Dismantling hard-earned benefits, critical services, and vital programs: Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Veterans’ benefits
• Mass firings of government employees without careful performance review
• Giving Musk insider access to personal data: Trump gave Musk’s DOGE team access to IRS records, Social Security data, and student loan files, without proper vetting. This raises grave privacy, ethics, and national security concerns.
• Direct financial conflicts of interest: Trump continues to profit from businesses while in office without divesting, violating the Emoluments Clause. He forced government agents and staff to stay at Trump-owned properties, funneling taxpayer dollars directly into his businesses.
• Profiting from a Trump-branded meme coin: Trump is now personally profiting from a cryptocurrency based on his likeness, blurring the lines between politics, influence, and financial exploitation.
• Engaging in suspicious financial behavior: Erratic tariffs, possible market manipulation, and insider trading (e.g., April 9, 2025 market incident)
• Using the presidency to promote Elon Musk’s business interests: Trump hosted Tesla at the White House, using federal resources to boost Musk’s stock and influence, while accepting support from Musk himself.
• Installing Trump defense lawyers at DOJ: Trump's personal criminal defense attorneys now control the Justice Department, making cases against his allies disappear and launching politically motivated investigations.
• Gutting the Civil Rights Division: The new Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department is now 50% smaller and has been stripped of its mission to protect the rights of Black, brown, LGBTQ+, and marginalized communities. It now focuses on helping white grievance cases, targeting transgender people, and pursuing so-called “voter fraud” cases.
• Firing independent oversight officials: Trump purged inspectors general and the head of the Office of Government Ethics, dismantling safeguards designed to prevent abuse and corruption.
• Weaponizing the FBI and federal courts: Trump uses federal law enforcement as a tool of personal retribution, punishing critics and rewarding supporters.
• Attacking independent institutions: Media, judiciary, and law firms not aligned with Trump’s agenda
• Extorting law firms: Firms are pressured to provide free legal work for Trump’s causes or face restrictions on client access to classified info or federal contracts.
• Appointing unqualified loyalists: Trump loyalty prioritized over qualifications, weakening international security and every other aspect of the US Government.
• Mishandling classified info: Including the Signal Chat scandals, with no accountability
• Weakening the FDA, CDC, FEMA, and NOAA: Trump’s administration has undermined science-based agencies, leaving states denied disaster relief and Americans without credible public health leadership.
• Gutting environmental protections: Trump denies climate change and has revoked numerous policies intended to protect air, water, and ecosystems.
• Suppressing unions: And abusing “Right to Work” laws
• Cutting programs for working families: While offering tax cuts to the wealthiest 1% of the population.
• Blocking gun safety reforms: Despite rising mass shootings
• Expanding nuclear threats: Undermining NATO and global stability
• Betraying Ukraine and U.S. allies: Trump has disrespected President Zelenskyy, spread disinformation about Ukraine, and cozied up to Putin — weakening NATO and our global standing.
• Threatened to annex sovereign nations: Trump has proposed annexing Canada, Greenland, Gaza, Panama, and other U.S. allies — shocking even our closest partners.
• Proposing overseas prisons for U.S. citizens: Trump proposed that five prisons be added to El Salvador's CECOT for US citizens, despite CECOT's global reputation for human rights violations.
• Trump ordered a military strike on Iran, a country that posed no imminent threat to the USA: Trump did not seek approval from Congress. This move was unconstitutional and illegal. This is the definition of an impeachable offense.
• Cruelty to refugees and asylum seekers: Including deportations without due process, like Kilmar Abrego Garcia, and deportations of children with cancer in the middle of treatment.
• Defying the Supreme Court: For months Trump refused to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the U.S.
• Targeting marginalized communities: Immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and women—using taxpayer data for persecution. Targeting transgender individuals with cruelty and misinformation.
• Ending DEI initiatives and civil rights programs: Trump has aggressively targeted racial equity efforts, women’s rights, and LGBTQ+ protections across federal agencies.
• Normalizing hatred, white supremacy, and political violence
• Glorifying January 6th insurrectionists: Offering pardons and praise
• Eliminating the Department of Education: Trump has called for a complete shutdown of the department, while pushing bans on books and censoring school curricula.
• Undermining public education: Book bans, attacks on free speech, and academic freedom
• Erasing history and silencing teachers: School, military, and government materials have been whitewashed to fit the Project 2025 / Trump ideological agenda.
• Suppressing voters and elections: Especially influenced by billionaires like Elon Musk
• Concealing the Epstein files: Denying Americans transparency
• Erratic, slurred, and paranoid speech: Trump frequently appears confused, forgets basic facts, and issues rambling public statements, raising serious concerns about cognitive fitness.
The people do not, and will not, support the normalization of tyranny. We will not support any elected official who embraces, enables, or excuses authoritarianism or kleptocracy. Ethical oversight has crumbled, and we’re witnessing the fallout in real time.
This is far beyond policy disagreements. This is about the soul of our nation. Are we still a democracy, or are we something else now?
Congress has a duty to the Constitution and to the American people, not just to donors or party leaders. We urge you to act with courage, integrity, and urgency. Stand up against this dangerous slide into authoritarianism. Protect what remains of our democracy.
In his first 5 months in office, Trump has done lasting damage that could take generations to repair. We do not have time to waste.
Congress, please reflect upon your oath:
“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely..."
Please—do the right thing.
With urgency and hope, here is our call to action:
Representative Green is taking the first steps by introducing Articles of Impeachment against Donald Trump. We call on every Representative to stand with Representative Green, support his resolution, and Vote to Impeach. We call on every Senator to commit to a full and fair trial and vote to CONVICT and REMOVE Donald Trump from office.
The signers of this petition demand accountability.
The Constitution demands accountability.
Democracy cannot survive without it.
Accountability cannot wait.
Democracy cannot wait.
The time to act is now.
This is not a drill—this is our country on the line.
Thank-you.

HOW TO IMPEACH A PRESIDENT
1-Catch the President committing “treason, bribery, or other high
crimes and misdemeanors.”
2- Investigate the President’s criminal actions in the House of
Representatives. (Optional)
3-Introduce one or more Articles of Impeachment in the House of
Representatives. These are like criminal charges.
4-Vote on the Articles. Pass with a simple majority. Note: The
Articles can be forced onto the floor for vote.
5-Hold a trial in the Senate, which may include producing evidence
and calling witnesses to testify under oath.
6-Vote to convict. Pass with a two-thirds majority. Remove from
office.
IMPEACHMENT MYTHBUSTING
Myth: Impeachment is impossible!
Fact: Impeachment is possible, and actually easier than overcoming a Presidential veto. Many, many vetoes would have to be overruled in order to keep this President in line.
Myth: Impeachment is a waste of time!
Fact: There’s little that Congressional Democrats can do that would serve the country better. They can’t introduce or pass good legislation while in the minority. All routine business should be set aside until Trump is stopped.
Myth: We have to wait until 2027!
Fact: We cannot wait until 2027. While a President cannot cancel elections, he can make it impossible for those elections to be free and fair. Also, Democrats are unlikely to gain much ground in Congress in 2026, given the seats that are up in that cycle.
Myth: Republicans will never impeach!
Fact: Congressional Republicans have a spectrum of attitudes toward Trump. Some are true believers, and some hate him but fear their Trump-loving constituents. Many of them will respond to political pressure to impeach. It’s our job to create that pressure.
Myth: JD Vance would be just as bad, or even worse!
Fact: JD Vance is nowhere near as popular as Donald Trump, and those who like him don’t love him the way they love Trump. He lacks Trump’s cult of personality. Also, in a world where Trump has been impeached, Vance will know he can also be impeached and behave accordingly.
