Support appliance repair initiatives in Los Angeles
The Issue
Every week, perfectly good refrigerators, washers, dryers and dishwashers end up in the trash in Los Angeles. Many are only 2 to 10 years old.
They aren't worn out. They break once, and the repair has simply become too expensive. Parts prices have risen an estimated 12–25% since early 2025 because of tariffs and supply-chain costs. Gas in the LA region is up about 29% from a year ago, which raises the cost of every service call. When a repair quote comes close to the price of a new appliance, families feel they have no choice but to replace it.
Local repair technicians are seeing this happen more and more every month. The result is more bulky waste for the City to haul away, more money out of residents' pockets, and fewer local repair jobs.
Right now, California offers rebates to buy new appliances, but nothing to help you keep the one you have.
We are asking the Los Angeles City Council to create an Appliance Repair Incentive Pilot:
A repair voucher covering 50% of an eligible repair, up to $250, for household appliances up to 12 years old
Applied as an instant discount at licensed local repair businesses
Funded as a one-year pilot, with results measured in waste avoided, money saved and local jobs supported
This idea already works elsewhere. Austria's national repair bonus has helped pay for well over a million repairs since 2022, and France has a similar program.
Repairing is better for our wallets, our local businesses and our planet. Please sign to ask the City of Los Angeles to make repair the affordable choice again.
