I’m a trans woman and I feel threatened for my life every day. The Uk , which should offer safety and freedom to everyone, often presents a different reality for trans women like me. We face discrimination, violence, and prejudice simply for being who we are. Trans women deserve to live in the UK where our rights are not just acknowledged but actively protected.

Despite progress in some areas, the current situation for trans women remains dire. According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 44 transgender or gender non-conforming people, many of them Black and Latinx transgender women, were killed in 2020 alone, making it the deadliest year on record since they began tracking these reports in 2013.

The legal protections that should safeguard us are either non-existent or inefficiently enforced. Even in places where laws are in place, the lack of public awareness and ignorance towards trans issues often leads to their disregard. This climate of hostility and indifference fosters environments where trans women are marginalized and victimized.

Concrete steps must be taken to address these injustices. Legal recognition of gender identity must be supported with solid anti-discrimination laws. Law enforcement agencies require proper training to understand and handle cases involving trans individuals with the sensitivity they deserve. Educational programs promoting understanding and acceptance of gender diversity should be implemented at all levels of schooling.

We must hold our governments accountable for the safety of all their citizens, especially the most vulnerable.
