Support A Required Inspection of Rental Properties In Quincy, IL.

Did you know a proposal for a mandatory rental inspection by the City of Quincy has been brought to the City Board TWICE and was voted down both times?!
As a citizen of Quincy, I’m sure you can attest to the often questionable living conditions found in many rental properties around our beautiful city. The Safe and Livable Housing Committee has been working with many local non-profit and community based organizations to gain support for a required rental inspection. Although they have been turned away twice by our city government, they would like to still work towards a city rental inspection for properties in Quincy.
This petition is to gain community support for a required rental inspection in our community. By signing this petition you are stating that you support the Quincy City Government creating and enforcing a required rental inspection. Your signature can show our city government that people in our community DO want this rental inspection!
What will this rental inspection do?
This rental inspection will ensure that rental properties in Quincy are meeting city and state housing codes and are SAFE to live in. That means that these properties will have working plumbing, working heat, and working electric. That means that these properties will be structurally sound and meet fire safety codes. That means that these properties will have doors and windows absent of major disrepair.
Many renters in Quincy fear eviction if they attempt to complain about their rental conditions. Because of this, many issues in our rental community go unaddressed. NO ONE in Quincy should be living in a home without heat. NO ONE in Quincy should be living in a home without running water. NO ONE in Quincy should be living in a home that is missing windows or has a severely leaking roof. And certainly NO ONE in Quincy should be paying a landlord to live in these kinds of conditions.
If you are renting a home or apartment that you feel is unsafe or inadequate you can file a “Minimum Housing Complaint Form” with the City of Quincy. Click this link to go to the form page: https://www.quincyil.gov/Home/Components/ServiceDirectory/ServiceDirectory/658/77
Retaliatory Eviction Prohibited: In accordance with Illinois Law (765 ILCS 720) it is unlawful for a landlord to terminate or refuse to renew a lease or tenancy of residential property on the ground that the tenant has complained to any governmental authority of a bona fide (good faith) violation of any applicable building code, health ordinance, or similar regulation. Any provision in any lease, or any agreement or understanding, purporting to permit the landlord to terminate or refuse to renew a lease or tenancy for such reason is void. If you believe you are or have been a victim of retaliatory eviction, consult with an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, you may contact Land of Lincoln Legal Aid Hotline at 877-342-7891.
