Our Vision for an Outdoor Swimming Pool in Eastville Park

Bristol currently lacks an affordable outdoor pool which is accessible to everyone in the community. The Bristol Lido in Clifton has a waiting list of 2,000+ people, while Henleaze lake has a two year waiting list. Our local rivers and seas are polluted with sewage, and North-East Bristol is chronically underserved with swimming facilities as the local indoor pools are reaching the end of their life. Outdoor swimming is having a resurgence and has proven health benefits, and there is an urgent need to prepare for the needs of future generations. 

Therefore, as local residents, we are campaigning for an open-air community pool and cafe to serve the diverse community living close to Eastville Park.

Eastville Park has an historic connection to outdoor swimming, making it an ideal place for a new outdoor pool to be sited. We are proposing to build the Lido on the underutilized second bowling green at the top of the park. This location will provide an easy connection to the children's playground, to nearby public transport and cycle and scooter parking, and to mains water. It will also complement the nearby recreational facilities and enhance these for the local community.

PROGRESS SO FAR

Over the last four years, a group of local residents with expertise in Business, Architecture, Public Health, Law, Fundraising, and Community Engagement has formed a Steering Group, working towards designing and building a new Lido for North-East Bristol. We have organised community engagement events, held community consultations, drawn up architectural plans and developed the vision to bring the plans for a lido in our park to life. 

Our main objective is to empower and engage local communities to make decisions and help to shape the design of the Eastville Park Lido and Community Cafe. Key to its success is an emphasis on affordability and inclusivity, making sure it welcomes, and can be used by, everyone. Its long term success depends on the local community getting involved to help run the facility, and ensure that all local groups are welcome and represented. 

We believe that a community-run outdoor pool in Eastville Park will have a deeply positive impact on our community, by providing affordable, welcoming swimming facilities to promote health and well-being, encourage cross-community engagement, and preserve our natural heritage.

As part of our on-going consultations, many voices in our community have clearly expressed the need and desire for an outdoor swimming pool and cafe. And now we need your support.
