Support a Bioregional Framework for the Saanich Peninsula

The Issue

The Saanich Peninsula is divided into three different municipalities (Central Saanich, North Saanich and Sidney) with their own plans and bylaws.

The Saanich Peninsula Environmental Coalition, along with the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council, wants to make sure that community planning is coordinated and considers how to preserve, restore and care for our shared natural environment on the peninsula. We have developed a bioregional framework to help accomplish this.

Integrating the bioregional framework into the three official community plans in Sidney, North Saanich and Central Saanich will help our environmental protection efforts have a lasting effect for years to come.

Recognizing that ecological health and human health are interconnected, help us ask the mayors and councils of North Saanich, Central Saanich, and Sidney to commit to:

  1. Working in respectful collaboration with the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation to recognize the rich and interconnected ecology of the Saanich Peninsula bioregion, and commit to working together to foster a healthy and sustaining environment for the future.
  2. Conserving, protecting, and maintaining the natural environment based on up-to-date research and best practices.
  3. Integrating W̱SÁNEĆ traditional ecological knowledge in a respectful manner.
  4. Operating collaboratively and cooperatively with neighbouring municipalities.

The Saanich Peninsula Environmental Coalition is a non-profit group that represents many community organizations and residents on the Saanich Peninsula. Learn about us on PlaceSpeak.

By signing this petition, you acknowledge that this petition will be shared with the three mayors and councils, and it could become a public document, making the information contained in it publicly available.
