Mandate L.A. County Department of Animal Care and control intake and care for all kittens.
The Issue
Dear Supervisor Barger and Ms. Marcia Mayeda, Director of DACC: Please immediately direct the L.A. County animal care and control centers to intake kittens and do a public service announcement stating that the DACC intends to intake kittens.
Since 2020, the DACC has been telling people to "put kittens back where they were found." The DACC is not intaking kittens that need vital medical care, food, shelter, and eventually a forever home. These kittens cannot survive on their own, at any age. The chance of the mom taking them back after they have been pulled is low and these kittens will most likely suffer and die from starvation or predation. These kittens did not choose to be born, they should not be forced to spend a life outdoors avoiding predators and trying to hunt for their meals.
These kittens can easily be adopted out if the shelter will intake them. Intaking and caring for kittens removes them from unsafe conditions. The public brings these kittens in because they recognize the danger these kittens are in and want these kittens to receive the care they deserve. And yet, The DACC tells the public to put these kittens back into a dangerous situation. The DACC is basically killing these kittens!
For those kittens that do survive, there is no assurance that these kittens will be spayed and neutered or vaccinated against rabies. Two of of the biggest accomplishments the DACC has made in LA county is practically eliminating Rabies in LA County and requiring the spay and neuter of all animals thereby reducing the population of unwanted animals. Intakes over the years have been reduced because of spay and neuter. Stopping the continuance of this will only increase the number of unwanted cats, and dogs, in the near future.
Please immediately instruct the shelters to intake all kittens. There are volunteers and fosters who will help. There are resources to turn to should there be an influx of kittens so no kitten needs to be killed for overcrowding. The public wants to know there is a safe place for kittens to go.
