Supermarkets to manufacture or sell larger nappies for children with extra needs
The issue
This petition is to ask supermarkets and retailers to provide or manufacture larger nappies and swim nappies for children with additional support needs, Special Needs or children who are delayed with potty training.
Many parents like myself have children who have special needs and/or have delayed potty training or who cannot access continence funding under the NDIS and have the situation that their children do not fit into the Size 6/Junior nappies found in the supermarkets/ retailers and cannot afford the expensive disability nappies online. Another problem is the swimming nappies that only come in three sizes up to a large and I have not been able to find bigger swim nappies yet.
It would be a game changer for so many Australian families. This is about accessibility - it would be amazing if anyone could buy Size 7 / Junior plus nappies and swim nappies extra large and up (bigger than the current Large at 14kg+) in our local Supermarket at a reasonable price without the disability/adult incontinence price tags when we want to and without needing to purchase expensive brands online with the wait times for delivery.
My precious son Tristian is 3.5 years old and has ASD, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Global Hypotonia, Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder and he is not potty trained yet and probably it will be many years before he will be. He has almost completely outgrown the Size 6/Junior nappies.
In general children/ people with disability can only access continence funding if approved by the NDIS after children turns 5. I also want to highlight that this is not only a special needs / disability problem but many children only become toilet trained/ potty trained when they are older for many reasons.
For a long time I’ve been becoming more worried and even a bit anxious about what nappies we will need to buy my son next. I came across Laura Rutherford and her beautiful son Brody on my continued search to connect and build a village online with other mothers walking similar journeys with children with special needs and especially also ones with similar conditions as my son. I saw that she started a petition for larger nappies and that it was successful in the UK. I decided there and then that I am starting this petition, it can be
done!! In the UK Tesco launched a Junior Nappy Plus in collaboration with Laura. Laura is aware of my petition as we have connected online since I found her amazing blog. Check out her beautiful blog
I’ve been in the process of documenting my journey and subsequently sharing some of it on Instagram
