Any large store currently prohibited from extended trading hours on Sundays must pay all workers (direct, agency and contracted employees) at least the living wage before being granted permission to open for longer.

The Issue

Big stores being able to open for longer on Sundays will negatively impact staff well being by putting added pressure to work throughout the weekend, no designated time when family interaction is guaranteed and possible stress of understaffed departments if trade is not enough to allow departments to be given enough extra hours. Workers in big stores have suffered enough through little effective union representation, low wages, unethical absence policies and often having to forego breaks and proper gaps between shifts.

Stores with the capability and revenue to request extra Sunday hours should be displaying the example of showing commitment to their staff by paying the living wage as they can afford to and this would increase staff productivity for the company as they will benefit more from their work.

This petition does not take away the decision of extended opening from being made at local level, but asks for the relevant government ministers to ensure the condition of paying staff a living wage is met before big businesses can apply for the extension.
