Baby Savannah is fighting a brain tumor, diagnosed when she was just 3 months old. Our insurance plan sent us to Texas Children's Hospital for the last four months for her treatment, but denied the surgeons request for an urgent surgery to save her life. Initially her surgeon thought it was a Stage 1 type tumor. However, her last MRI indicated rapid growth, leading her surgeon to believe it could be a Stage 4 type tumor. He immediately scheduled her for an emergent surgery this week. We discovered only a few days before her scheduled surgery, that our insurance plan denied the surgery and want to send her to a local surgeon, rather than our specialist, after we were assured for several months they would approve it. If we had more notice, we could have changed plans to another network. Furthermore, I just retired from the military, but will not have Tricare coverage until August, due to a lengthy delay from the VA on my retirement case.
Of the 18,000 brain tumors diagnosed in the U.S.each year, only about 5 are infants under one year of age. Due to this rarity, most facilities and surgeons have little to no experience with the most fragile patient for surgery. As a result, the national average for survival in infants for this surgery is 47%. Texas Children's Hospital has close to 90% survival rate alternately. Would you accept less than 50-50 survival rate, when you can have almost 100%? Please help me save my baby's life and urge Superior Health Plan to cover this life saving surgery at Texas Children's Hospital.
