We, the students of Port Isabel High School would like to prevent our future cell phone usage from being prohibited during the course of the school day if a rule change occurs to ban cell phone use for the 2019-2020 school year.

Why Should Students at PIHS Be Allowed to Use Cell Phones?

  • It teaches responsibility by allowing students to make the mature choice of not using the phone for games or cheating, but instead numerous educational purposes to benefit the learning environment.
  •    A study recently conducted by Radboud University shows that a majority of people think significantly more creatively if they listen to music while working.  Students need to use their cellular phones for this, and in a world full of problems, why shouldn't students be given something that helps them think outside the box and could lead to these issues being creatively solved one day?
  • Students should be allowed to use cell phones also because of emergency reasons.  If a student forgets something at home that they absolutely must have for the day ahead, instead of not being prepared, they could simply send a quick message home via text and have their parents come bring whatever they mistakenly forgot.  Even on a day when you make a mental mistake and forget to bring your test study guide to school after working on it the night before the big test, you could quickly text home and get it to school, resulting in getting a better grade.
  • Having a cellular device with you can also teach you to focus.  You may have your phone with you as a temptation to use it for purposes unrelated to school, however students that would like to maintain their grades and finish all the assignments they are given will learn to put the devices away and focus on their work.  School is all about preparing students to go out into society, so why not allow cellular use to demonstrate that you must focus to succeed?
  • High school students can sometimes be very defiant to rules and harm their academics as a result of this.  If phone usage is prohibited at Port Isabel High School, students may just ask to leave the classroom and take their phone with.  In fact, 94% of high school students across the United States claim that they would like to use a cell phone for academic purposes, so instead of forcing high school students to conceal our phones, why not allow them to be used at the discretion of the teacher?
