Save Step Up Day Supporters started this petition to Superintendent of Schools Christine Johnson and Assistant Superintendent of Schools Greg Martineau

On March 15, 2019, Southborough parents were notified via email that Southborough schools traditional Step Up Day at the end of the school year, where children visit their classrooms for the next year and have a chance to meet their teacher and classmates, will no longer happen. There was no warning of this change, no discussion and in our minds, no justification for it other than to align with what Northborough schools do. Southborough students will still get to visit their school for the next year if they are changing schools, but they will not find out their teacher and classmates until August.

We, as parents in Southborough, do not want this change and want to preserve our traditional Step Up Day for the betterment of our students. We ask the administration to reconsider their decision for the following reasons:

- Traditions like Step Up Day are what many of us love about living in a small town like Southborough. The sense of community and honest commitment to its students drew a lot of us to raise our children here. There is a tremendous support system here for all children, some who need it more than others. We should protect this.

- Southborough schools differ from Northborough schools in that we change schools every 2 years whereas they have neighborhood schools. Typically, Southborough students have 7 or 8 classrooms per grade and Northborough has 2. There is no comparison as our children do not know every one in their grade and benefit greatly from our Step Up Day tradition.

- Step Up Day lessens anxiety in children both in June and again in the fall when they start school and have already met their teacher and classmates and seen their actual classroom, not just taken a tour around the school. This is what makes our Southborough teachers and schools so special - let’s preserve this!

- To answer claims by the administration that eliminating the traditional Step Up Day allows changes to be made mid summer if need be (new students, students leaving etc), this negates all the hard work teachers do to ensure proper classroom and classmate fit for each student. They devote so much time and thought to these placements before school gets out and to say they can now just be changed mid summer does a great disservice to all the hard work they put into these decisions.

Please join us by signing here to make our collective voices heard to save Step Up Day here in Southborough. Thank you!
