Hello All!

Thank you for signing up for our email list or signing our petition. We are now going by BELA, Bellingham Educators for Liberatory Action. We are calling upon you now to act.

There is a school board meeting taking place this Wednesday, 7/15 at 6 pm, and we want our message to be on the agenda. We have reached out to board members and so far they have been unresponsive, which is why we are hoping to bring more community voices in to increase the pressure on them to address our demands.

Please support our cause by emailing the school board (board@bellinghamschools.org), as well as Sheri O’day (sheri.oday@bellinghamschools.org) who is currently receiving community comments/public participation. We ask that you take this action before the meeting on Wednesday to highlight the community's overwhelming support to remove police from schools. We are including the link to this upcoming meeting here (https://bellinghamschools.zoom.us/j/98398958770), and encourage you to attend if you would like to learn more about how our district leaders are discussing community concerns around police in schools. We will also be planning a phone bank action soon, but in the meantime please feel free to call any of the school board members as an additional means of communication.

Remember that the school board was elected by the community to represent us, and listen to us. Your voice is important to this movement. Show the district that BELA’s mission is heard and supported by the community. Our stance is to:

Remove the District Resource Officer (DRO) from the Bellingham School district, end police participation in school events, & end the lunch program in which visiting armed police officers eat lunch with students in school cafeterias.

Thank you again for involving yourself in this action and participating in such an important cause. Stay tuned for additional action items over the next month leading up to the August 19th school board meeting, as well as for further updates, action, and movements made by BELA and the greater community.

With our deepest respect,

BELA
