We are parents and friends of Fairview Elementary school,  in the Monroe County Community School Corporation in Bloomington, Indiana. The sudden midyear change in direction for students and teachers, coupled with the poor administrative communication, is highly disrespectful of the Fairview community.

The radical restructuring at Fairview that has taken place overnight is deeply dismaying. There has been only a token effort to inform teachers of this major change, and virtually no opportunity for them to prepare for their new classrooms.  There has been a complete disregard for Fairview families, with communication with families only as an afterthought.

Our children are not the sum of their test scores, nor are they guinea pigs.  Yes, there are important educational needs for kids at our school, and we need to find a way to address them.

We can engage our children as the learners that they are, with educationally sound and developmentally appropriate practices. But to make effective change for our students, administrators need to work sincerely and collaboratively with parents and teachers.

As parents and friends of Fairview Elementary school,  in the Monroe County Community School Corporation in Bloomington, Indiana, we request that MCCSC:

-              Effective immediately, repeal the new classrooms where Fairview students are segregated by test score.

-              Restore previous classrooms for the remainder of the school year, where all students have time for reading and math as well as science, social studies, art, and music, and Artful Learning.

-              Consult teachers, engage students, involve parents, and work collaboratively to develop a plan that leverages Fairview’s strengths to address students' educational needs, to be implemented starting  in the 2014-15 school year.
