Open access to residence halls before 11pm with SUNY Oswego ID.

The Issue

In the past, SUNY Oswego has allowed open access to each residence hall with a valid student ID before 11pm. Easy access encourages students to make new friends, form study groups and achieve greater knowledge of the school campus. The system was effective at broadening horizons, while also properly maintaining safety. The newly implemented ID system causes many problems that can create stress, harm, and danger to students.

Some problems consist of:

1.) Littlepage and Pathfinder dining hall tunnels become almost exclusive to those living in connecting buildings on West Campus.

2.) Tunnel from Lakeside dining hall to Riggs (often used to get from Johnson Hall to the side door of Riggs during inclement weather) is no longer usable by students unless they are living in Riggs Hall.

3.) Any social interactions, especially community builders are greatly hindered. Furthermore, if doors are left open a greater risk is created.

4.) If there were to be a potential predatory or weaponized threat and you would need to get into the nearest front or side entrance to a building, you would be unable due to the doors always being locked, unless you are residing in that residence hall.

5.)  Most importantly we witnessed firsthand, three university police officers unable to access Riggs Halls during an emergency with their ID because of this new system, delaying their response time to a possible life or death situation.

Overall, the new ID system deprives students from their freedoms and could prove to be less safe than past security restrictions. The petition is here to inform administration of our views as students (as we are the people who have to follow these rules).
