Help SUNY New Paltz Black Studies Department Gain Co-Ownership of All Subjects/Majors!
The Issue
The SUNY New Paltz Black Studies Department has, for a prolonged time, been in complete disrepair, making it difficult for its Black and Brown students, faculty, residents, and non-residents to have a humanistic and fulfilling experience at the college.
This disquieting experience comes with lack of funding, the needless time and large sums of money allocated to the construction of at least its third Science Building, president Donald Christian’s moral posturing on the college being a supposedly “diverse” locale, and minuscule efforts to make the campus what he claims it to be.
In conjunction with calls to defund the police (both on the campus and in the town), there have been several suggestions made to suggest that not only the police be defunded, but that the money be reallocated to the infrastructure of the Black Studies Department with forthcoming attempts to hire more Black faculty (not just in the BSD, but in every department on the campus, as much of Black history has long been codified in subjects such as Anthropology, Physics, Philosophy, Music, and so forth. We would encourage more Black and Brown people to attend the school, to take on whichever subjects or majors/minors they yearn to delve in, and to gain an accurately historic perspective in what we are learning.
