In May 2018, the city of Vancouver voted in favour of banning plastic straws and polystyrene containers - effective June 2019. We are in a global plastic pollution crisis, and countries worldwide are implementing similar bans. These plastics DO NOT biodegrade, and will pollute our earth and oceans for generations to come. It is imperative that our coastal community becomes more sustainable, and quickly.
One million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans, and this number is growing. 78 million tons of plastic flow into our ocean each year, and approximately 40% of the ocean's surface is currently covered with floating trash.
We are petitioning our local government to create bylaws prohibiting the distribution of plastic straws, single-use plastic bags and utensils on the Sunshine Coast. There are biodegradable options widely available to those who require a replacement. It is time to STOP the senseless consumption of single-use plastics.
