Good morning!

It’s the start of a new week and only 14 days until council stops taking in any new feedback regarding the Caloundra Transport Corridor.

Whilst we have just hit 3300 signatures, unfortunately council have made it quite clear this petition alone wont be enough – that doesn’t mean it wont help though so keep sharing! The State and Federal Governments are also contributing to this project, and can influence the outcome.

From past petitions we do know that directly contacting council individually DOES WORK!

This week please set aside 10 minutes to prepare and email directly to council and other elected members to tell them how you feel about this project. If you have more than 10 minutes – FANTASTIC! Call or text them. Remember, we want them on our side – so please don’t send any abusive emails or texts or get angry at them over the phone, these need to be heartfelt and honest. The elected members are here to represent the people in the community so tell them how you feel!

Bellow you can find all of their contact details – I have ordered this from MOST to LEAST importance in regards to this project – so if you have limited time just phone/email/text the first few. Every one of these members has a say in the final decision, each one of these members is representing YOU and the community in their vote – tell them how you feel. If you are just sending an email and have limited time you can simply email mail@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and cc in the rest of them.

Wondering what to say?
Connect with them on what you’re passionate about, weather you own a small business and want to support another, you care about the environment, you care about where your rates and tax money is being spent, you care about the development that will happen to the RSL memorial gardens etc. Remember to include that we voted these council members in, we don’t have to at the next election if we feel they aren’t representing out us appropriately.

I have provided a draft of what I will be sending below, feel free to use this for inspiration but please do not copy directly as this is a personal message.

"Dear …

I am writing to express my concern about the Caloundra Transport Corridor.

The environmental, community and economic impacts this development will have will be devastating.
Since finding out about this project I, with the help of other animal ecology students have begun documenting the Wildlife within this beautiful park -  we have found well over 100 different animal species, some of which are incredibly fragile to environmental change – particularly noise and light pollution. Whilst the council has stated this impact will be minimised we all know this wont be enough. This park is also one of the last parks that provides feed trees and shelter to the already venerable Glossy Black Cockatoo. There are also 2 environments in this park that are already endangered  - we cannot afford to lose more of this! Mortality rate and fragmentation is already extremely high around this habitat, adding another road will dramatically increase this.

As stated, I am also concerned about the community and economic damage this will cause. Small local businesses are being eradicated in this project and the RSL memorial gardens are being effected – these are so important in our community!

Economically, people come from far and wide to enjoy the serenity the Sunshine Coast has to offer – we are not Brisbane and we are not the Gold Coast, we are unique in our own beautiful way and as we slowly chip away at the limited green space we have left we lose that desirability. Economically this is NOT a smart move.

Please, do not ruin our small town with construction we simply DO NOT NEED. Council has finally released traffic model predictions that suggest the volume of vehicles on this road in 2036 is 21,500 vehicles per day. The maximum capacity of a 2 lane road is approximately 18,000 vehicles, and a four lane road is about 36,000 vehicles. These numbers suggest the road hardly warrants 4-lanes. In addition to this the future upgrades to other roads such as Caloundra Road roundabout, Pelican waters directly to the Bruce highway and Aura directly to the Bruce Highway will mean far less people will be using Caloundra roads to get out of their suburbs. There are other options and we need to work together on this. YOU represent us as a community and I do not feel this project is a representation of myself, my values or my community. Your vote towards this project WILL influence my vote at the next election and I know many others feel the same. We need a elected members who listen to the community; so please, be that person".

Regards,
Jasmyne

Thank you everyone so very much for your support so far! We need as many people standing up for what is right if we want to win this. Don’t let council ruin the Sunshine Coast.

Regards and thank you,
Jasmyne
