Plight of the Hermies

In the latest of my series of blog posts on animals exploited by the pet trade, I delve into potbellied pigs, often sold under the misleading marketing ploy of "teacup pigs." READ: My Piglet’s So Cute, You Want One, Too? First, Add 100 Pounds and $100k.

In this essay, I shed light on what life is really like with a 100-pound pig who was supposed to top out at just 35 pounds. Hint: It involves a lot of mess, a lot of destruction, and a lot of money.

Unfortunately, because of of breeders churning out ads for "micro" or "teacup" pigs, thousands are ultimately dumped at shelters every year when they become too big or too unruly. Those who do stay small are usually underfed per breeders' instructions, resulting in frail, malnourished pigs who die at a young age (like the tragic tale of Beacon, a pig who was kept in an aquarium and was only the size of a milk jug at 2 years old).

If you, like me, have always wanted a pig, my blog is a must-read. Don't forget to share it on social media to help tackle all the misinformation about these complex animals--and help people make the best choice for their families.

Thank you for your compassion!
