School Dress Codes Need to Change: Stop Labeling Females's Body's As Distractions
The Issue
The school dress code violates a student’s First Amendment right to freedom of expression, and a parent’s Fourteenth to raise a child as they choose. It unfairly targets female students by banning clothing commonly worn by females, such as; leggings, shorts, skirts, off the shoulder clothing, dresses, tank tops, ripped jeans, crop tops, and much more. Because of these unfair bans, instead of being able to focus on studies, young women have had to sacrifice comfort and confidence, as their bodies are judged as “distractions”.School faculty is saying that boy’s learning is more important than girl’s because when girls are taken out to be dress coded so that boys aren’t distracted it is taking away from their education. The dress code excuses boys for disrespecting women’s bodies and is objectifying girls' bodies.Instead of punishing girls, teach boys a little respect and that girls are humans too not objects to get “distracted” by.
School dress codes are extremely outdated. They first became popular in 1969 and have rarely changed since then. Now it is popular for shirts to show midriff or shoulders and jeans to have holes, because of this it can be hard for students to find outfits that conform to the rules. If the dress code changes, students will be able to express and discover themselves, instead of conforming to a different person so as to "not distract others"
