Delay Sumner County Students Returning to the Classroom Until Coronavirus Numbers Decline

The Issue

Rushing to reopen Sumner County classrooms before getting COVID-19 under control will bring the same result Tennessee has experienced since reopening the state in May; avoidable surges in hospitalizations & deaths, but among our state's children, teachers, & families.

Being proactive is better than being reactive. The acceptable number of student, faculty, & school community deaths is zero. With the way that cases are rising in our area, going back to a physical school setting is rushed and unwise.

Expecting students to wear their mask for 7 hours puts more responsibility on students which is too much of a gamble. Not to mention the difficulty of enforcing masks on school buses.

We need to begin the school year from a virtual setting so we can keep our school communities safe. This gives our school leaders the flexibility to make a measured & scientific decision when cases eventually decline. Mandated mask wearing in schools will be more necessary when we first see a steady decrease in covid numbers around us.

Sumner County teachers have been told that students will only be required to wear masks as long as the county mandate is upheld. We need the Sumner County School Board to mandate masks for every person who walks into a Sumner County School building in order to protect our students, faculty, & school communities.

More scientific studies have come out that support the positive impact masks have on curbing the spread of COVID-19. According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, the expected death toll would drop by approximately 40,000 if 95% of the population would simply wear a mask.

The Wall Street cited Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when he said he believes, "the pandemic could be brought under control over the next four to eight weeks if “we could get everybody to wear a mask right now.”

This mandate is crucial because of a recent contact tracing study conducted in South Korea. This study found that children aged 10-19 would spread COVID-19 at a similar rate of an adult.

We need to protect our county's teachers, students, and community members who have underlying health concerns. If we truly believe that life is precious and something to be protected, we need a mask mandate from the Sumner County School Board.
