Finally, a big step forward to rid the world of plastic pollution. Starbucks has officially announced that it is going to eliminate plastic straws by 2020. If all goes as planned, straws that are currently ending up in landfills and oceans after one use alone will be phased out from more than 28,000 Starbucks outlets globally, including the 101 in India. This has made feel extremely hopeful about my campaign. The one that all of you have supported. I believe Starbucks can be persuaded to go a step further and eliminate the single-use plastic-lined cups as well. But at the same time, I feel doubtful because Starbucks made a similar promise exactly 10 years ago and did not follow through. We cannot let this happen again. I believe pressure from customers like us will ensure that Starbucks delivers this time around. I saw UN Environment chief Erik Solheim’s tweet welcoming Starbucks’ announcement. I retweeted it and pitched the idea of eliminating the single-use plastic-lined cups! That gave me an idea. I would like all of you, the 10,000+ people who signed my petition, to retweet my post to @StarbucksIndia and CEO @sumitro_g. Here is the tweet you can retweet: https://twitter.com/prarthana2103/status/1016668140065968128 Don’t forget to use the hashtag #EveryCupMatters. If over 10,000 people are talking about this on Twitter, that will send out the message loud and clear.
