Suman TV: Air a Special Show to Promote Mental Health Awareness #ShowUpforMentalHealth

The Issue

Let me take you back to my 14-year old self. I was a South Indian Classical music vocalist. Transcending into a world of music meant the WORLD to me. I went to school, studied, participated in creative co-curricular activities and everything was just perfect!

Until it all came to a screeching halt.

Our family went through severe financial issues and for years, there was barely enough food for all of us. This completely changed emotional dynamics within my family. I went from singing to silence and from doing well to barely passing in school. I felt lonely and hollow from within. I wished that I was not part of what was happening around me. And, I often wondered if I could physically run away from all of it.

As I look back, 20 years later, I recognise that I was going through a mental health issue. But, I did not have anyone to talk to and this could have easily led to self-harm. Today, as a development sector professional, I see many young people like myself who are going through extremely challenging situations. 1 in every 7 people in India would suffer from mental health issues (Lancet). However, they do not have to go through mental health issues  alone,  in silence or in shame.

This petition therefore calls for action from a leading Telugu channel, Suman TV to do the following:

  1. Run an awareness campaign (show) on mental health in the state of Telangana before or during the World Mental Health Day (10/10/2023)
  2. Display the Tele-MANAS (Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across State) toll free number, 14416 on your ticker especially after disturbing news.

Suman TV is a path-breaking, content-driven Telugu channel which has the power to reach the masses. The channel believes in making news accessible to people on their finger-tips.

It is our responsibility to normalise conversations on mental health and create a safe space for all to seek help.
