The Issue

As a member of a 501c3 public charity animal rescue in our community, I am deeply invested in the welfare of animals in need. Our mission is to provide care and support for surrendered animals, ensuring they are healthy and ready for a loving home. Unfortunately, our community is facing a serious health threat due to the irresponsible actions of some pet owners who give away puppies and kittens without proper health protocols.

Across our county and state, dangerous and potentially deadly viruses such as Parvo and FeLV are spreading rapidly. These viruses pose significant threats not only to the animals they infect but also to public health and the safety of other pets in our community. The spread of these viruses is largely due to pet owners giving away animals without verifying their health status – a practice that undermines public trust and risks the lives of countless innocent pets.

Suggesting those who give free puppies or kittens away to have vaccination records and negative Parvo and FeLV tests on hand before they transfer animals to new owners is a simple yet crucial step. This measure will ensure that all animals are free from these dangerous diseases before they enter their new homes. It will also encourage responsible pet ownership and protect the broader community from potential outbreaks.

Other states and municipalities have successfully implemented similar policies, showing that it is both feasible and effective. For instance, areas that require proof of vaccinations and health check-ups for animal adoptions have seen a notable decrease in the spread of contagious pet diseases. By following their lead, we can create a safer, healthier community for all.

We urge local authorities to mandate these health checks and vaccinations, making it a suggestion for any individual giving away pets. This preventative measure is not only essential for the wellbeing of the animals but also in safeguarding our community from the unnecessary spread of these diseases.

Please join us in this crucial initiative. Sign this petition today to show your support for responsible pet ownership and to help stop the spread of deadly viruses like Parvo and FeLV in our community. Together, we can advocate for policies that protect our pets and ensure a safe environment for everyone. Sign the petition now to make a difference.
