Save Whaleyville, Virginia Residential Community from "Solar Farm"!
The Issue
A proposal for a 17 acre Solar Farm has been brought to Suffolk Planning Commission by Chaberton Solar Whitney LLC.
The proposed site is on property located at the SE quadrant of the intersection between Great Fork Road and Lucy Cross Road. Zoning Map 64, Parcel 58B.
There will be:
a negative environmental impact that will interfere with the peace and enjoyment of our rural residential neighborhood. More importantly, why a solar array backed up to family backyards? What benefit to the community and our children?
an increase in the amount of impervious ground on the 17 acre parcel that will have a negative impact on the storm water run-off in an already low lying high ground water area.
a reduction in the green canopy and an increase in the heat generated by 17 acres of solar panels which will have a negative impact on the ambient surrounding temperature and air quality.
a decrease in surrounding property values, thereby decreasing the tax revenue that is currently being generated for the City of Suffolk.
There are at least 5 homes with second story windows that look into the 17 acre parcel. The view of the solar panels from those 2nd story windows will not be hidden regardless of any proposed vegetation buffer. Fenced solar arrays are a prime attractor for natural predators, able to dig under fences and via drainage areas, forming a hazard for pets, children, and even farming livestock.
There has been no commitment to date from the Whitney Solar Company to replant dead or dying trees and ground cover.
Please consider signing and sharing this Petition against the proposed project and allow our homes and community to remain intact without intrusion of a solar array. Immediate neighbors of Great Fork rd and Lucy Cross rd stand against this solar project. Please stand with us and let your voices be heard.
