End arbitrary detentions and other forms of harassment against political opposition members peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly.

The Issue

Peaceful freedom of expression is both a basic human right as well as a necessity for the preservation and promotion of human rights in general.

A specific case involves Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi who was arrested (17 May) and charged with undermining the Constitution after publicly criticizing human rights abuses against civilians in Darfur by a government-aligned militia called the Rapid Support Forces, but released a month later.  She was arrested again on on arrival at Khartoum Airport on 11 August after returning from a meeting in Paris. Either charge Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi with a recognizable offense or immediately and unconditionally release her.
