Success! Your Signature Helped Free Mohan!
UPDATE — September 21, 2016
Success! Thank you so much for signing this petition and being Mohan's voice. You came together with people from all over the world to free this elephant, and today, your dedication and determination paid off; Mohan will live the rest of his life as a free elephant.
The unluckiest elephant in the world? Not Mohan. Not anymore. But this isn’t just a win for Mohan—it’s a victory for elephants around the world. Mohan can now be seen as a model of hope for them, and a reminder that as long as we work together, we can Save India’s Elephants.
On behalf of Mohan and from all of us at Wildlife SOS, thank you!
PS: We will be posting photos regularly of Mohan’s journey home as well as his adjustment to a life of freedom and peace on our Facebook page, here: www.facebook.com/wildlifesosindia
Stolen from the wild as a young elephant calf, traumatically torn from his family herd, he has never known how it feels to be loved and what it means to be free.
Mohan is a working elephant in India. Since he was captured, his days have been filled with vicious beatings to force him to comply with his trainer’s orders. His days and nights have been spent in chains with constant malnourishment and little or no water to drink.
Two times already, attempts to rescue Mohan have been thwarted, and we at Wildlife SOS have begun to call poor Mohan the Unluckiest Elephant in the World.
The Pratapgarh court had decreed that Mohan be shifted immediately to Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center in Mathura, where he can receive treatment for his wounds and all of the care he will need to recover from more than 55 years of abuse and neglect. However the person holding possession of Mohan has challenged the Court’s verdict in a Higher court in an attempt to delay the matter.
We are requesting the Commissioner of Allahabad to help us release Mohan from his chains in lalganj so he can be shifted to the Elephant Conservation and Care Center in Mathura. We faced an angry mob of 300 people the last time we tried to rescue him, and there is no reason to expect that this attempt would be any less dangerous. We need a strong, determined police presence to ensure our team’s safety and Mohan’s safe rescue.
That’s where all of you come in! We need your support to help ensure that we can rescue Mohan and bring him safely to his new home. Please sign and share this petition today! Let’s change Mohan’s luck and life together!
- Government of Uttar Pradesh
Commissioner of Allahabad
Mohan the elephant has been beaten and abused for more than five decades in chains. He is malnourished, dehydrated, and in dire need of proper care. Even in this condition he is still forced to work in blatant violation of the law.
The offender holding Mohan in chains in Lalganj has been abusing him for many years. The U.P. Forest Department has initiated action to rescue Mohan elephant with assistance from Wildlife SOS, and shift the elephant for long term medical care and rehabilitation to the Elephant Conservation and Care Center in Mathura where he will be able to live the rest of his life free from pain and with dignity.
Despite having all necessary documentation required to take custody of Mohan, as well as Police Protection, the Forest Department and Wildlife SOS were met by an angry mob in Lalganj incited by the elephant’s owners who prevented Mohan elephant's rescue.
The Hon’ble Court of Pratapgarh in a recent court order dated 13/5/15 in Case No 4000/14 dismissed the revision petition filed by the offender while also confirming that Mohan Elephant’s condition is severely deteriorating and he must be immediately shifted to the Elephant Rescue Center. However the offender has challenged the verdict in a higher court, in an attempt to delay the rescue of Mohan and mislead the court. The High court has asked the Chief veterinary Officer of Pratapgarh to submit a status report of Mohan’s health condition within three weeks. We are hopeful the learned court will see the facts in the matter and dismiss the offender’s writ petition and order that Mohan be shifted immediately to safety.
We humbly appeal to you to kindly enforce the law by providing a strong, determined and well-equipped police presence to arrest the offender and escort Mohan Elephant safely to the Elephant Conservation and Care Rescue Center.
The elephant is India’s heritage animal and is worshipped. It is sad to see an elephant being subjected to such abuse and suffering when India’s rich culture preaches Ahimsa and non violence!
Thank you for your kindness and for helping to free Mohan.
