After reading this article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2616576/Subway-removes-ham-pork-nearly-200-stores-strong-demand-Muslims-eat-Halal-meat.html, I was shocked and appalled to learn that Subway, a company that is ‘committed to making a positive impact in all [they] do’, now has 185 branches which are halal-only.

The halal process is barbaric - the animal must be slit at the throat, hung upside and allowed to bleed dry. The animal must be conscious while this occurs. If the animal is not stunned beforehand, it suffers unnecessarily.  

It is illegal in the UK to kill an animal without prior stunning, but Muslim meat producers are exempt from this on the grounds of religion. Subway says that all of their halal meat comes from animals that were stunned prior to slaughter – but how can they be sure? Especially when there are an estimated 12 abattoirs in the UK that are dedicated to unstunned slaughter.    

The ideal would be to remove halal meat from Subway stores completely – but we should at least have the opportunity to choose. Having halal-only stores discriminates against those who chose not to eat halal meat.  

Please note that this petition is purely down to animal cruelty, not to religious beliefs.

Sign the petition and send a strong message to Subway that we do not want halal-only stores to become commonplace in the UK.
