Subway have recently announced that their franchise in the UK will drop traditional meat (such as pork, bacon etc.) from almost 200 stores, in faith of the Muslim belief, that is, for Halal meat.

 

Here's a refreshing memory of the process to "produce" Halal meat. It's not so much a special kind of meat, more of a special method to slaughter animals.

 

This is what Subway are supporting, in way. (They have stressed stunning is required, however).

 

Dhabiha - "This is the name for the halal method of slaughter, which requires that animals are killed with a swift incision to the throat from a razor sharp blade. The animal must never see another animal being slaughtered nor must it ever see the blade being sharpened. Animals must be checked prior to slaughter to ensure they are healthy and given clean water to drink, once they have drunk they are turned to face Mecca, the name of Allah is spoken and then the throat is cut and the blood drained from the carcass.

When carried out correctly the sudden drop in blood pressure to the brain renders the animal brain dead within seconds and many researchers have found Dhabiha to be less stressful and painful to the animal than modern western methods of slaughter. (Complete lies) The intention behind all of this is to ensure that the meat is fresh and free of impurities, the animal is given proper respect and Allah is thanked for providing us with food."

If you believe our country is becoming the posession of beliefs that the majority do not want to be part of, sign this petition in light of Subway's actions. It's a crude, horrible and unfaithful method of animal slaughter (as with any animal slaughter), but this has to stop. 

It's not only just removing traditional-type meat, it's completely replacing it's stock with Halal meat.

Subway is a multi-million pound well known, and popular food franchise. Let's stop them pandering the minority and let the majority be heard first!

 

Wait, what am I supporting here? 

Remember, they're allowed to be slaughtered without stunning techniques legally, which is covered by a "law" called the Sharia Law. This is a set legal system for Muslims, derived from the Koran. However, Subway claim all livestock are required to be stunned prior to death. 

However, this petition is more towards the support of the shocking figures shown below - telling Subway that we are not standing for the conversion of an American franchise in to a complete religous-based franchise - especially at the alarming rate they are increasing at. 

 

What does this slaguther process mean?

In a nutshell, the slaughter process exempts the cruel method of "cutting the throat" without pre-stunning. And yet, a legal system which is in the minority, is allowed to justify our legal system? Countries all over the world are implementing legal laws (or least have serious concerns) on such slaughter methods due to the inhumane process. 

 

Are there any legal implications in place? 

To put it short - yes. Susequently, slaughtering without stunning is permissible in accordance to the law dictated by the Sharia Law (a non-EU/UK legislation).

Surely Subway are complying with the law? 

Respectively, yes. Though, remember, it's what you believe is morally right and acceptable, and, whether you choose to believe that this is really what is happening inside these slaughterhouses and/or whether you think it's right that Subway are allowing these franchises to expand upon the majority to comfort the minority. 

Subway have said in response:

“All our suppliers comply with EU animal welfare legislation as a minimum and we require suppliers of halal products to adopt the stunning of animals prior to their slaughter. All halal meats are certified by the appropriate halal authorities.”

 

So, what's the problem? 

There are currently 1,684 Subway branches in the UK, almost five times as many as in 2004. 

Take in to account those 185 newly Halal-made stores, on top of the 90+ current ones, that's still an increasingly worrying percentage. That's almost 17% of Subways in Britain alone.

Let's not forget how our own government has recently declared us post-Christian. It's your choice here to make your voice heard. Whether you disagree with Subway's claimed "legal" method of killing animals through a religious belief, or, you disagree that Subway seem to believe that a mind-blowing 17% of Subway franchises need to cater a religious belief amongst the proclaimed Muslim population, it's entirely up to you.  

 

But surely this will be aimed at the Muslim majority in the UK?

It may be. Though, 17% is an alarming and extremely worrying number. I fail to believe that 17% of Halal-only stores "just" cover the Muslim majority.

This isn't a lie, it's becoming reality. Should we be worried about the way such companies are allowed to be franchised by private owners? I think so, and it's time to act.

 

Did you almost forget you were British?

I did too.

Let's tell Subway that we are not subjects of beliefs or laws that do not explicitly apply to us, meaning we shouldn't be forced to eat specific food from a franchise based on beliefs. It's classed as "cross-contamination" when Halal meat is served along side normal produce, stopping our traditional food being served instantaniously.
