Federal Recognition for the Mono Lake Kutzadika Tribe

Federal Recognition for the Mono Lake Kutzadika Tribe
Why this petition matters

Dear Supporters,
We, the undersigned, are asking for you support of H.R. 3649 'Mono Lake Kutzadika Tribe Recognition Act'. The Mono Lake Kutzadika Tribe has been attempting to gain federal recognition since the early 1900's. During the 1970's the tribe petitioned the OFA (Office of Federal Recognition) and at that time the petition was lost. The petition was resubmitted in 1980, and in 2015 the petition process was put 'on hold' to revise the acknowledgement regulations. The tribe continues to meet the seven criteria for federal recognition at this time.
Due to this lengthy process this has caused a great loss to tribal members culturally, including protection of cultural resources, traditional homelands, tribal law enforcement, and active participation in federal policies to preserve water, as well as opportunities for education, employment, and health care.
The Kutzadika see this petition as a way to address government concerns, and expedite the recognition process.
Many tribal elder's have commented "I'll never see this in my lifetime" and we, the undersigned, need your support to urge the committee to advance H.R. 3649.
Gratitude for your signature and show of support,
Mono Lake Kutzadika Tribal Council
