Temple plans to move forward with reopening campus despite well-documented risks to students, faculty, staff, and community members. We demand that Temple move all instruction online for the fall, defund the Temple University Police Department, and open their planned coronavirus testing site to the public.

Students, staff, and faculty take public transportation to get to class, and then return home to their families. North Philadelphia residents pass through campus every day. No amount of social distancing will be foolproof in protecting us. Masks and hand sanitizing stations will not adequately protect us from a deadly virus. The only way to ensure the safety of Temple stakeholders is to go virtual.

Temple refuses to make the decision to shut down and conduct all instruction online because they value profit over the lives of their community. Even one death or contraction of coronavirus will not be worth it. As a penned opinion in Billy Penn put it: "It doesn’t seem too much to ask that the university advocate for and protect its neighbors. It doesn’t seem unfair to ask that Temple would take steps beyond the meager expectations set forth by a nation that hasn’t even come close to combating this pandemic effectively. It seems that a medical school, of all places, would stress the physical health of a neighborhood over their own financial health."

Temple's faculty union, the Temple Association of University Professionals, has already called for Temple to shut down, a demand supported by more than 1,000 professors, librarians, and other university professionals. This decision will affect adjunct professors, too, who already receive little benefits and protection: "If any adjunct feels unsafe and declines to teach in-person, or they get sick while teaching and can’t work, they’re faced with a lose-lose situation, union leaders said, since they aren’t guaranteed their paychecks and may not be able to access unemployment."

These risks are unavoidable, and if Temple cares about its students, staff, community members, and faculty, it will shut down. Sign the petition to stand strongly with TAUP, RAFT, the Temple Coalition for Change, defundTUPD, and the Black and Brown Coalition PHL to demand that Temple move to all-virtual instruction for the fall.
