Value Our Teachers #StandWithFremontTeachers
The Issue
FUSD and FUDTA have recently been negotiating for this year's contract. Recently, they declared an impasse. FUDTA is asking for a 4% increase but FUSD has only offered them .71% but this is barely enough to get by in Fremont! FUSD claims that they don't have enough money to support our teachers yet the superintendent makes an annual salary of $295,000 (FUSD site). They say they value our teachers, yet their actions don't reflect their words. Besides not compensating them with better pay, the district does not offer them affordable healthcare options and is denying their right to unpaid childcare leave. Teachers are fighting for smaller class sizes as well to ensure a better learning environment for students.
Teachers are, other than parents, the key people who shape the future generations of doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. We all have one teacher or maybe teachers who have helped get you to where you are today. Think about that teacher who has made a positive impact on you and do this for them. Also, most teachers go above and beyond what their contract requires them to do. Many teachers commute-ranging from 40 minutes to an hour- just to come and teach us.
Not only is Fremont Unified School District losing valuable teachers, but they will also go to Work To Rule which means teachers will work only what is required of them: No recommendation letters, no clubs, teachers rooms closed before school, at lunch, and after school, and teachers would only grade during their 54 minute prep period so assignments will take much longer to get feedback on.
So, what can you do? Sign and share this petition. Tell your parents and friends. Write a comment of support down below. Email the school board members and voice your concerns ( emails listed down below). Last but not least attend district meetings ( happens every two weeks on Wednesday) and maybe speak to show your support. Teachers deserve so much more.
