Singapore Chinese Girls’ School has taken our drink store away without our consent and it’s currently causing many problems. Our drink store vendor had been working in our school since the 1950s and is no longer with us as our school has stopped selling all sweet drinks and only hot or room temperature drinks. 

The school made the decision in June 2019 and asked our drink store aunty to decide whether she wanted to continue selling drinks but only ROOM TEMPERATURE water was allowed. She had to decline the offer as she had to share the store with another vendor and was inconvenient and she would not be earning much money. She genuinely enjoyed selling drinks to us primary and secondary school students not because of only making money but also seeing us students. 

However, it was ironic as our school started selling drinks from the vending machines even though clearly stating they wanted to reduce sugary drinks. After the school released her from her position as a vendor, she has been having insomnia as has been affecting her health drastically. 

Our school’s alumni is also concerned about the sudden dismissal of the drink store. Even though we understand that the government wants to promote healthy living however they should have asked our opinions and consent before taking matters into their own hands.
