Online ONLY for the Remainder of the Fall Semester at NMU
Why this petition matters
For the remaining 2.5 weeks of the Fall 2020 semester we are signing a petition to boycott in person classes/labs/etc that put the health and safety of students, faculty and staff at risk for contracting COVID-19 and a strike of all in-person activities at Northern Michigan University on November 5th and 6th, 2020.
Many students and staff feel unsafe participating in-person activities, and if NMU won’t help us we will take the initiative in our own hands to protect ourselves.
After many social media and in-person witnesses of multiple huge parties last weekend due to Halloween, and parties before Halloween the transmission of COVID-19 is running rampant through campus. There are *currently 74 positive cases and on November 4th we added 20 new positive student cases.
Almost every class is losing students due to positive cases, close contact with a positive case, and quarantine. We need to be proactive, not reactive to protect ourselves and faculty. Everyday we needlessly expose ourselves to the risk of getting sick at the will of Northern Michigan University.
Marquette is facing the worst outbreak of COVID-19 it has seen since the beginning of the pandemic yet nothing has changed at NMU.
Fieras is closed, Temaki & Tea is closed, and Melted is closed. Despite NMU’s best efforts and planning, they cannot prevent widespread transmission. We need to switch to online only before this worsens exponentially.
