The current Cumberland County district dress code not only infringes upon students' creativity & self expression, but also contains heavy misogynistic undertones & double standards in regards to dress code upon female students vs their male peers. Enforcing a dress code mainly catered towards woman under the precedent that their bodies are a distraction to the learning environment is making feminine students feel ashamed and sexualized in their own bodies. The current dress code not only sexualizes feminine bodies, but overall devalues female education by enforcing the students to leave the classroom until they are dressed in what is deemed a "non-distracting" manner which violates Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Meanwhile, these actions support the ideology that "boys will be boys". Instead, the school system should redirect the energy they are currently using to police the feminine body into educating students on how sexualizing their classmates is flawed. With that being said, this petition is rallying for a change within the current Cumberland County school district dress code and the way it is written and enforced in a misogynistic, sexist manner.
