Keep A Choice For Letter Grades for 2nd Semester 2020 At Madison West High School

Keep A Choice For Letter Grades for 2nd Semester 2020 At Madison West High School
The Issue
It is very important for students to have a choice in their education. If MMSD is to stick with a pass or fail system for this semester, many students would suffer. It has been said that a pass fail system would create the most equity, but this is invalid. While it is true that people do not have the same learning opportunities, this does not create a “do no harm” system.
Students should be given the choice to continue with a grading scale or pass/fail. For example, many students are trying to raise their GPAs and this does not allow that raise.
This decision was made by MMSD Teachers and Administration. Students had no say in this decision, which is not fair, as it only impacts the student.
Our MMSD students are now at a deficit as this was not a Nationwide decision. We are put at a disadvantage by not having this semester’s grades count if that is the choice that the student wants.
Here is an example solution to this problem: students could be given the option via email to decide to take their classes pass/fail or to keep their letter grades. If they choose not not to respond with their preference within a week or two then they can be defaulted to pass/fail. This could be case by case if needed by certain students.
