On September 19, 2018, the namesake of the University of Mississippi Meek School of Journalism took to Facebook to address concerns with the condition of the Oxford, Ole Miss, and the Square. Ed Meek, without permission, published photographs of two African American women in nightclub attire in order to illustrate his personal issues with decreasing enrollment rates, tax revenues, and real estate values in Oxford and at Ole Miss. This post cast an “unjustified racial overtone that is highly offensive,” as stated by the Chancellor Dr. Jeff Vitter. Meek’s actions do not reflect the views of the Meek School of Journalism, the University of Mississippi, or the City of Oxford. The Creed at the University of Mississippi states that, as a voluntary member of the community:
”I believe in respect for the dignity of each person. I believe in fairness and civility. I believe in personal and professional integrity. I believe in academic honesty. I believe in academic freedom. I believe in good stewardship of our resources. I pledge to uphold these values and encourage others to follow my example.”
The actions of Ed Meek have not only violated basic ethics of the journalism, but have also contributed to the notion that racism is alive and well at the University of Mississippi, despite the University’s consistent efforts to reconcile its shameful past. This petition moves to remove Meek’s name from the Department of Journalism program and the Department of Journalism building at the University of Mississippi in hopes of correcting the unjustified racial comments about African American population at the Univeristy of Mississippi and in Oxford to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
