Abolish The Whitman Grading Policy!

Abolish The Whitman Grading Policy!

The Issue

The Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University currently implements a grading policy for undergraduate classes of 15 or more students as follows: the class average cannot exceed 3.3 (B+) and the maximum percentage of A/A- grades must not exceed 33%.

There are many issues with this policy.

First, it promotes a solely competitive atmosphere in which students do not care as much about learning the material, but more about achieving higher grades than their fellow classmates.

Second, it does not allow for students to receive the grades they earned. There are ramifications for this, including potential missed internship and job opportunities.

I’m sure many of you have experienced this unfair policy. As an example, in my Principles of Finance class, I received a 94.78%, which was curved down to a B+. This is not a reflection on my professor’s grading policy; rather he was forced to abide by the Whitman Grading Policy.

There are countless examples of this curve hurting students and making it extremely difficult to receive the grades they earned.

Please sign this petition so students of the Whitman School of Management can achieve the education we were promised, and the grades we earned.

Once we reach a critical mass of signatures, this petition will be sent directly to the dean.

Thank you.
