We need your help! This is a group of year 11s from Auckland Girls Grammar and we are trying to create more diversity in the uniform. Right now all aggs students have access to the typical short and long skirt, although we do have pants and shorts but they aren't easily accessible. To get Pants in our school we have to write a letter to the Deputy Principal with reasons as to why we want the pants. Our group struggles to understand why we must write a letter for pants but not a skirt, does it lay with sexism? Or Heteronormativity? (Society painting heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation) We want to be able to go to the school shop and get pants without putting any more effort than getting a skirt. After a few conversations with staff in the school we were told “if you really want pants the easiest way is to say you are part of the LGBTQ+ then the DP cant say no”, This concerns us. We think pants should be accessible to everyone, they are easier to move around in and makes life at school less restricted. Overall we need your help to change the old uniform rules in AGGS for the better, it would mean alot to many of the AGGS students.
