Student Microwave Use at Lawrencetown Consolidated School
The Issue
Please sign this petition to give the students at Lawrencetown Consolidated School access to a microwave at lunch time so they can have a hot healthy lunch.
My son has ADHD and has been prescribed a medication to lessen his hyperactive behavior. One of the side effects to this medication is loss of appetite and weight loss. These side effects really took over my son's life and his pediatrician put him on a strick high protein and high calorie diet, with guidance from the IWK.
I leave for work at 6am so packing a hot high protein meal in a thermos in the mornings does not fit into our lifestyle, nor is packing one at 5pm the night before healthy as it poses a risk for food poisoning.
Lawrencetown Consolidated School refuses to accommodate my son's dietary needs, even after a letter has been sent to them, and the school board, regarding his health needs. The cafeteria does not always serve foods appropriate for my sons needs, so that is not an option for us either, unfortunately.
Before covid, the school had microwaves for the students to use. Once restrictions were dropped is also when my son started really needing the use of a microwave for his new diet. But two weeks into school he was coming home with a full lunch box still. I asked him why he wasn't eating and he said because the staff told him the microwaves in the building were for staff use only, and he had to eat his food cold. After numerous phone calls and complaints regarding this, I also received a phone call one day before my son's lunch break from the principal of her informing me she would not be heating up his chicken dinner. My son came home and started to cry because he was not feeling good and said he was gagging trying to eat his cold lunch. This is unacceptable in a school that should be teaching and encouraging students to eat healthy and accommodations made for any child who has a medical need and it not be rubbed in that they have microwave use but the students cannot. I have done a small bit of interviewing with parents and staff from schools around the valley and so far all responses have been that those schools all accommodate microwave meals at lunch time.
