Good morning all! Last night’s School Board meeting went well. Both of us had an opportunity to speak to the Board. Due to the number of speakers signed up, we were only allotted one minute of speaking time each.
Following the public comment period, the School Board reviewed the document “Proposed Action Plans to Combat Systemic Racism” (This document is available for viewing on the School Board's web page: https://go.boarddocs.com/vsba/loudoun/Board.nsf/Public). In it was a section dedicated to considering renaming the Raider mascot. After the presentation, the Board decided to schedule a vote for Monday, June 29 on whether or not to change the mascot.
If you feel strongly about changing the Raider, Monday is the definitive time to make your voice heard. We call on you to please sign up to speak to the School Board. School Board meetings currently are virtual, so you can speak from the comfort of your home. To sign up, registration will open tomorrow starting at 8 am, and be available until 1 hour before the scheduled meeting time (tba). For more information, please visit the School Board’s Citizen Participation page: https://www.lcps.org/Page/226240. We will let you know when registration opens. Depending on how many people sign up, the time allotted to each speaker could vary from 1-2 minutes, so please plan accordingly.
If you do not feel comfortable with speaking, you can also email your thoughts to the School Board at lcsb@lcps.org.
We thank Board Members Ian Serotkin of the Blue Ridge District and Beth Barts of the Leesburg District for bringing this subject up and advocating for an expedient vote. (Both districts fall in the LCHS attendance zone).
Thank you all for your continued support as well. We are so close to realizing this change and helping to make Loudoun County High School better reflect the community that attends it.
