ECO DU Group started this petition to Stuart Corbridge (Vice Chancellor) and

Durham University must take responsibility for its carbon emissions, and its negative contribution to the climate change emergency. Many of you joined us at the climate strike in November to demand pragmatic change towards carbon neutrality. The university has not acted upon this demand, and therefore we must continue to fight in order to make climate change a priority.

Durham University has thus far failed to declare a climate emergency. This is a failure to take responsibility for its participation in global warming. The University has been offered a partnership to develop a comprehensive plan on the decarbonisation of campus by two companies - Siemens and Buro Happold. Moreover, the Durham Energy Institute and professor Jon Gluyas have been working on this for a while, and have presented different pathways for change. Nonetheless, the University has failed to seriously commit to any of these projects, which would pave the way towards a sustainable future. In signing this petition, you will be telling the university that this is unacceptable, and they must enact change.

Carbon neutrality, or the reduction of carbon emissions, is not something which can wait. Back in November, ECO DU submitted a list of realistic demands regarding decarbonisation, and nothing has positively changed. We must remind our university of the importance of this fight, for our generation and the generations to come. This is not a future problem – people are suffering from the effects of climate change right now. Students have asked that the university act on these demands, and we are asking again now. If a tenth of our university sign this petition, Durham University cannot ignore us. Help us make Durham University carbon neutral.
