Resignation of Dr. Judith Magann, Stroudsburg School Board Director, due to racist remarks
Judy Magann, a Stroudsburg School Board member, recently left a very disturbing voicemail to a parent seeking advice about an issue they were experiencing within the district. Below is a transcript of the voicemail.
“It's Judy Magann. Um, I think you have an illusion about Stroudsburg that doesn't exist [unintelligible] is at an all time low, our superintendent hires the cheapest teachers. He cuts programs. It's all about diversity equity, which white privilege is not, uh, something that there's, you know, doing anything but screaming in your faces and the programs are not available for academically challenging kids. Uh, I think you're going to be sadly disappointed and I suggest Blair and Moravian because they're applying for Blair now. And if you're not happy with the dance situation, I can't even begin to tell you all of the things that are not going right in this district. So as someone who knows you and your husband, I usually, I encourage you to think about Moravian or Blair, because I would not be keeping my kid in and there's board members who are pulling their kids because there's so much going on that isn't even, you know, uh, a dance issue if there's serious things academically and all the other stuff. So if you want to talk about it, you can give me a call, but, um, it, Stroudsburg is very disappointing at this point. And the dance thing is, is, is really not a big thing when you look at all the other stuff that's gone along, but I just wanted to give you that heads up. I'm not going to do a debate on Facebook, but, um, I would seriously if I had a ninth grader be thinking about changing it. Okay, bye."
To begin, she has every right to her opinion as a parent and/or friend to this caller. However, it is unacceptable to speak poorly against the very district where she sits as an active school board member for over 12 years. Secondly, in 2021, she should be "on-board" with the implementation of racial equity within the school district. Judy implies that white privilege is not prioritized higher than diversity and equity. These types of comments whether said privately or openly, do not have a place within Stroudsburg's school district. With remarks such as these, Judy cannot make fair and impartial decisions for ALL students in the Stroudsburg School District.
This behavior and these remarks are intolerable and as a result, Judy Magann needs to resign her position as a School Board member. If she refuses to resign from this post, the School Board of Directors have a responsibility to the students, parents, teachers, and community to intervene and remove her!
