STRONGER PROTECTION & ACCOUNTABILITY FOR CHILDREN IN STANISLAUS COUNTY
The Issue
Our children deserve to be heard. Families deserve answers. Every child who finds the courage to speak deserves a system that responds with compassion, transparency, and care.
Our family is asking the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office and County leadership to strengthen the way child sexual-abuse cases are investigated, reviewed, communicated, and handled.
Our child courageously reported a sexual abuse crime by someone we knew and trusted. She consistently provided her account to the appropriate authorities. Yet, despite the clarity of her account and our family's pleas for justice, our family was informed that criminal charges would not be filed because the available evidence was not sufficient to proceed with prosecution.
We understand that prosecutors must follow the law and cannot file charges without sufficient admissible evidence. But when a case is closed, a child's experience should not be treated as though it no longer matters.
Families deserve to understand what happens after a child reports abuse. They deserve clear communication, access to victim services, and meaningful information about what options may exist when that have questions or concerns about a case.
We are asking Stanislaus County to:
- Strengthen specialized resources for child sexual-abuse investigations and prosecutions.
- Expand trauma-informed training for prosecutors, investigators, and processionals working with child victims.
- Improve communication with families about case status, available services, and what happens when charges are not filed.
- Explore an independent review process for concerns about closed child sexual-abuse cases, without interfering with prosecutorial independence.
- Strengthen collaboration among law enforcement, prosecutors, child-protection professionals, medical providers, victim advocates, and Children's Advocacy Center professionals.
- Increase transparency and accountability while protecting the privacy and confidentiality of child victims.
We are also asking for our child's case to be reviewed.
We respectfully ask the Stanislaus County District Attorney Attorney's Office to review our family's concerns and determine whether any additional investigative or prosecutorial avenues remain reasonable available under California law.
This petition is asking that:
- Every reasonable avenue be considered.
- Families receive meaningful communication and support.
- Closed cases are examined for opportunities to improve.
- Children are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.
This is bigger than one family.
It is about every child who may someday find the courage to speak.
Our children deserve a system that listens. Families deserve transparency. And every child deserves to feel that speaking up matters.
