The Issue

As a lifelong resident of beautiful Franklin County, VT, I've seen the place that I call home be incrementally stripped of its safety due to escalating crime rates, particularly those involving drug-related offenses. This is not the legacy we want for our community.

Our county has witnessed a surge in crimes committed by repeat offenders, while also dealing with the harmful substances being smuggled into our community from elsewhere. Both issues are detrimentally impacting the wellbeing of our population and the security of our neighborhoods. Offenses related to illegal drugs also put an alarming strain on our local resources. The U.S. Department of Justice confirms that treating substance abuse could halve the crime rate and significantly reduce the government's expenditure on criminal justice (U.S. Department of Justice).

It's time for Franklin County to adopt harsher penalties for these criminals, particularly for repeat offenders and those who bring drugs into our community. Harsher penalties will act as a deterrent, potentially reducing the crime rate and sending a clear message about our county's stance on crime and illegal drugs.

Furthermore, we desperately need more funding for our drug treatment facilities in our state. A fully equipped facility would provide the support and treatment necessary for those struggling with addiction, contributing to the reduction in drug-related criminal activity. The National Institute on Drug Abuse affirms that comprehensive treatment programs can decrease drug use and its associated health and social costs (National Institute on Drug Abuse).

Let's stand up for our community and insist on crucial changes that will restore safety and tranquility to Franklin County. Please, sign this petition and join our call for stricter penalties for criminal activities and the establishment of a state drug treatment facility in Vermont.
