I am a firm believer in justice and fair play. The recent allegations against Cal Foote in regards to the Hockey Canada scandal have come to light and shaken the hockey community to its core. It is deeply unsettling that a person charged with such heinous acts by the London Police Department (LPD) continues to be celebrated as a champion in the world of hockey. The Stanley Cup, an emblem of skill, dedication, and integrity should not bear the name of an individual facing serious charges like sexual assault.

Sexual assault is a grave crime that affects millions worldwide. According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), every 68 seconds an American is sexually assaulted; in Canada, 30% of all women age 15 or older report experiencing sexual assault at least once (Canadian Women’s Foundation, 2022). By allowing Foote's name to remain on the Stanley Cup, we are inadvertently normalizing such behavior and sending out a message that fame and talent can overshadow crimes.

We must uphold our values above all else - respect for all individuals regardless of their status or achievements in society should be paramount. We call upon the National Hockey League (NHL) and its Commissioner Gary Bettman to take immediate action - remove Cal Foote’s name from the 2020-2021 Stanley Cup.
