Why this petition matters

Started by Khrystle Hopper

Construction and remodel contractors and "handymen" are running rampant throughout our communities without proper enforcement using Deceptive Business Practices, stealing from trusting homeowners, and doing terrible, shoddy work. The city department of Planning and Inspections is NOT helping the public. The Better Business Bureau cannot enforce all these contractors and they have the same information on bond and/or licenses (which is often bogus) that the public has.

General contractors say they have "qualified" sub-contractors, but none are licensed or "qualified" and often are not legal US citizens.

On the App, NextDoor.com there are hundreds and hundreds of homeowners complaining about contractors and handymen charging for work that is never done/never completed/done badly or simply running off with the money. Countless other homeowners are not using this app have undergone similar problems.

When money has been taken from elderly homeowners (considered Elderly Abuse) who have no way of hiring an attorney (because the contractors have taken all their money) the homeowner has little to no recourse and the contractors move on to the next victim. This infestation, therefore, propagates (as noted on NextDoor.com)

We are petitioning for stricter regulations for ALL trades. If a contractor engages in Deceptive Business Practices and the homeowner has proof of their allegations, the police department should get involved and it should not be considered a Civil matter. We NEED CHANGE to help our communities and the people who live there so that people no longer
have to fear being taken advantage of and having no justice.
