I am a resident of Rugby, North Dakota. My home was invaded by two men who sexually assaulted me. One of them escaped justice. This is not just my story, but the story of many women in our town who have been disrespected and violated by men.

The State Attorney and BCI Investigators were far from supportive during my ordeal; they even tried to twist my traumatic experience into a consensual act. Their lack of professionalism made me feel suicidal and forced me to relive moments I didn't fully understand due to being drugged.

This is an urgent call for change in our legal system. We need stronger laws against rape and more robust rights for victims like myself who are often re-victimized by the very system that should protect us.

According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), only 5 out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison, while survivors are left with lifelong trauma. This statistic reflects a broken system that needs immediate reform.

We demand comprehensive training for all law enforcement officials dealing with sexual assault cases – training that fosters empathy, understanding, and respect towards survivors. We also urge stricter penalties for those found guilty of such heinous crimes as well as measures to ensure no perpetrator can evade justice.
